International Organizations

 

Follow the links below to explore these examples as well as the themes which surround them and the individuals, agencies, institutions, and organizations which have contributed to their success. For example, consult the geographically indexed World Heritage List of UNESCO’s World Heritage Centre website to examine its recognized cultural (and natural) heritage sites. Likewise, on the Europa Nostra website see its lists of projects, programs, and individuals that have received annual Europa Nostra Awards. To study the field projects of the World Monuments Fund see its Projects List. The publication series and website of DOCOMOMO (International Working Party for Documentation and Conservation of Buildings, Sites and Neighborhoods of the Modern Movement) is the primary source for information on conservation of buildings exemplifying the Modern Movement. See also the websites of the International Union of Architects (UIA), national organizations of architects, and the websites of allied professional organizations such as the International Council of Museums (ICOM), the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (IIC), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and the World Bank and its subsidiaries including the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) and the InterAmerican Bank for Development (IBD).

Journals and other Serial Publications

A variety of serial publications provide theoretical explorations and as well as examples of best practices and threatened sites. A few titles include the International Journal of Architectural Heritage and Future Anterior as well as the publications of international and national organizations such as the World Heritage Review, Preservation, European Cultural Heritage Review, and the GCI Bulletin. The contents of the back issues of many of these and other journals can be accessed individually at their websites, or collectively through searchable catalogs, such as that of ICRROM library, which can be found online, and the Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, which can be accessed through many research libraries.

 

More technical presentations of architectural conservation projects are found within a variety of specialized trade journals and periodicals including the Journal of Architectural Conservation and the APT Bulletin: The Journal of Preservation Technology. The publications of numerous other heritage protection organizations are also good sources of information on the technical aspects of architectural conservation. Examples include: the magazines of English Heritage, the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB), SAVE Britain’s Heritage in Great Britain, the Getty Conservation Institute’s newsletter, and the CRM magazine of the U.S. National Park Service. Conference proceedings such as those deriving from the triennial general assemblies of ICOMOS are particularly good sources of information on conservation methods and technologies. Most such information is published online and one should note availability of earlier publications that may be offered in the form of PDF’s such as monographs and magazines of ICOMOS and WMF.

Bibliographic and Research Databases

 

Books about architectural conservation and allied subjects can be located via online library indexes and catalogues including the Getty Conservation Institute’s Art and Archaeological Technical Abstracts (AATA), the Bibliographic Database of the Conservation Information Network (BCIN) based in Canada, and WorldCat, which locates titles in the libraries of many countries. The ICOMOS Documentation Centre Catalogue and the indexes and holdings of the libraries of both ICCROM and the Getty Conservation Institute are particularly rich sources for publications on architectural conservation and related topics. Specialty bibliographies may be offered by subject or region such as those in the appendices of Time Honored and Architectural Conservation in Europe and the Americas.
